THE LITTLE CHAPEL

The miniature jewel in Guernsey's crown.

Built in the first half of the 20th century by exiled French monk, Brother Déodat, The Little Chapel was inspired by the Rosary Basilica at Lourdes and is intricately decorated with pebbles, seashells and broken pieces of china.

Dissatisfied with his first attempt, Déodat rebuilt a second which proved too small for the Bishop of Portsmouth to enter. Embarrassed, he demolished it and built the version we see today. Returning to France in ill-health, Déodat never saw his passion-project completed.

One of the smallest of its kind in the world, The Little Chapel can only accomodate a handful of people at a time. It has fallen into disrepair on several occasions and is now managed by a charitable foundation which recently undertook major restoration work.

Brother Déodat Antoine

Exiled to Guernsey after French law banned faith-teaching, Brother Déodat, a member of The Brothers of the Christian Schools, began building his Little Chapel in 1913.

He built and demolished 2 versions before creating a 3rd, which stands today.

Returning to France due to ill-health in 1939, Déodat died without seeing his project finished. Brother Cephas was entrusted to complete the decoration until his retirement in 1965.

THE ORMER

As well as broken china, The Little Chapel is also decorated with a variety of seashells.

Known locally as the Ormer, most of the world call them Aberlones. Guernsey is the most northerly of their range but their reputation as a delicasy has made them rare. 'Ormering' is now strictly controlled through size restrictions and gathering is only permitted on certain low tides.

The inside of the shell is covered in irridescent mother-of-pearl, making them particularly ornate when lit by the sun.
